چکیده

introduction: in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, dosimetric studies are performed on the dosimetric systems in order to comply the radiation safety standards. monte carlo methods are used due to the high complexity and cost of patient-specific phantom construction. the high complexity of the digitized phantoms greatly increases the time and computational task of the monte carlo calculation. in many studies, all of the defined components and high precision of the voxelized phantom are not necessary and the study objectives could be achieved by a simple digital phantom modeling. in this study, an anatomic-based human head phantom was modeled considering the importance of the digitized phantoms for monte carlo dosimetry measurements. methods and materials: in this study, the anthropomorphic head phantom was simulated using mcnpx (version 2.4.0). the proposed head phantom consist of the skull, brain, eyes, eye lens, facial bones, neck and skin that are modeled based on the atomic compositions and density magnitudes reported by icru report no. 44 and the national institute of standards and technology (nist) reports. results: the visual and structural characteristics of the modeled head phantom in different cross-sectional views were evaluated by two scientific experts. for modeled phantom, integrity and compliance of the structural features with the actual human head were confirmed by the experts.simulated phantom is flexible and upgradeable. according to study objectives, other tissues including tumors, the specific tissue of interest, and etc. could be added to the model. discussion and conclusion: pre-clinical dosimetric studies including the determination of dose to organ at risks in the diagnostic and therapeutic situations as well as the effect of shielding methods and imaging geometries in the image quality could be evaluated using the modeled phantom.

Choice of phantom materials for dosimetry of Leksell Gamma Knife unit: a Monte Carlo study.

In calculations for the Leksell Gamma Knife, GammaPlan employs a tissue equivalent material without the presence of a skull bone, while dosimetry work is based on a polystyrene phantom. The compatibility of these dose distributions is uncertain. The Monte Carlo technique was employed to determine the radial dose distributions from a single 14 mm collimator helmet in 160 mm diam phantoms with di...

Application of MCNP4C Monte Carlo code in radiation dosimetry in heterogeneous phantom

Background: In treating patients with radiation, the degree of accuracy for the delivery of tumor dose is recommended to be within ± 5% by ICRU in report 24. The experimental studies have shown that the presence of low-density inhomogeneity in areas such as the lung can lead to a greater than 30% change in the water dose data. Therefore, inhomogeneity corrections should be used in treatment pla...

A Monte Carlo study of SPECT in boron neutron capture therapy for a heterogeneous human phantom

Background: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a binary radiotherapy combining biochemical targeting with neutron irradiation. However, monitoring the boron distribution is a fundamental problem in BNCT. Prompt gamma rays emitted by boron capture reaction can be used to address the issue. Materials and Methods: The general-purpose Monte Carlo toolkits Geant4 and MCNP were used for the simu...

Comparison of Electron-Beam Dose Distributions in a Heterogeneous Phantom Obtained Using Radiochromic Film Dosimetry and Monte Carlo Simulation

Introduction: Nowadays new radiochromic films have an essential role in radiotherapy dosimetry. Properties such as high sensitivity, good reproducibility, high spatial resolution, easy readout and portability have made them attractive for dosimetry, especially in high-dose-gradient regions. Material and Methods: In this study, electron-beam dose distributions in homogenous and heterogeneous pha...

RC-3a Monte Carlo Simulations for In Vivo Internal Dosimetry (including phantom development)

The radiation doses received by individuals from radionuclides which enter the human body cannot be measured directly but must be inferred. In these calculations several measurable quantities (as the internal whole body burden or urine daily excretion) and quantities derived from models are employed. The Radiation Protection Quantities for internal dosimetry are in principle the same as for ext...

A Mixed Monte Carlo and Quasi-monte Carlo Method with Applications to Mathematical Finance

In this paper, we apply a mixed Monte Carlo and Quasi-Monte Carlo method, which we proposed in a previous paper, to problems from mathematical finance. We estimate the value of an European Call option and of an Asian option using our mixed method, under different horizont times. We assume that the stock price of the underlaying asset S = S(t) is driven by a Lévy process L(t). We compare our est...
